A Series of Unfortunate Events

I’ve been feeling a little under the weather lately. Not only in the sickly sense, but I’ve fallen into a pretty downhearted state. I had to call in sick on Friday which has only left me racked with guilt. It was a necessary action, but somehow the three day-turned four day weekend feels rather tarnished. I feel better today, but I’ve been a little depressed. My boy is away for the weekend and I’ve stayed pretty hermited away in my apartment.  With the wedding and all it’s surrounding celebrations behind me, I realize it’s a little difficult to face the mundane humdrum of everyday life. I’m grateful to have a job, but it’s far from my ideal profession and I’m feeling quite uninspired.

However, I really dislike feeling this way so I try to make lists and remind myself of the things that do inspire me and spur creativity. My first step was getting out the apartment and spending some time at the bookstore. This was definitely a big help. I picked up Lucy Gayheart because I adore Willa Cather. I also bought A Passage to India because I want to go there very much and because E.M. Forster also penned another great favorite of mine, Howard’s End. Last, but not least, I purchased Under the Tuscan Sun which I have yet to read and thought might serve for some much needed escapism.

I’m also watching one of my favorite movies, A Series of Unfortunate Events. No matter how many times I see it, I am captivated every time…

One of my favorite parts of the film: the animated sequence during the closing credits. Delightfully Gorey-ish.

What kinds of things pull you out of a gloomy mood and inspire you?

  1. Nothing gets me inspired like getting a project getting done! Whether it is just getting photos printed and in their albums, or painting a room! I also loooove getting rid of ‘stuff.’ Like going through my closet and purging ill fitting things. I just love a fresh start :)

  2. If you liked the movie, read the books! They are so much fun. My son and read the first three together then he got too old and insisted on reading them himself.

  3. Oh my darling, feel better. I think it is perfectly alright to huddle away from the world for a bit with some books, movies, and music. I have actually not yet seen A Series of Unfortunate Events, but I think I might need to now if it makes you feel so much better. My movies are Support Your Local Sheriff and Stardust. 30 Rock is always good, too.

I actually did not get into Under the Tuscan Sun, though. Have you read any Kate Chopin? I recently discovered her gloriousness. And I also love Willa Cather.

    Whew. That’s a lot of comment :)

  4. Thank you Reyna! And yes to Kate Chopin! The Awakening is one of my most very favorites books. It makes me cry every time I read it. I think perhaps I was Edna in a past life…
I saw your post about Stardust and now I’m putting it in my Netflix queue! I’m only a chapter into Tuscan Sun so far. I like, but um… It’s nothing like the movie! (I admit this a little sheepishly)

  5. That is SO weird. I decided to check out new blog posts and read this while Unfortunate Events is playing right now in our household!!

  6. LOL. Yes I own it, but I was also watching it on TV that night.

  7. I hope you are feeling more uplifted. Feeling trapped in an uninspiring job can be so stiffling hence why I’ve recently left mine to persue my dream of setting up shop on etsy selling my art and jewellery. Almodovar movies, Japanese anime, family guy and Jim Henson’s ‘The Dark Crystal and ‘The Labyrinth’ are my go to’s for uplifting my spirit. Oh! And going round to my grandma’s for Jamaican comfort food :)

  8. Laura, i do so hope your down has lifted now. they are not so good places to be! im mid one at the moment, and i dont even know why. but when i get here, i always feel better if i can walk in wide open places and then i clean ( i know im a bit odd, it must be putting things in order that does it) and i loose myself in books too *ruthie*
